Consumption: more than one in four households has consumer credit

If the figure is slightly down, the share remains stable: 26.8% of households held a consumer loan in 2018 according to the Observatory of Household Credits. This is more than during the 2013-2016 period, but lower than the 2000s when it was around 30%. The same stability characterizes intentions for 2019.

A recent CSA Research survey for Lite Lender indicated that 15% of French people plan to take out a loan to finance their projects in 2019. This is more than the intentions collected by the Household Credit Observatory (4%), but it is less than the proportion of households that were committed to at least one consumer loan in 2018: 26.8%. Data which has fallen in one year (-0.4 point) but which remains relatively stable. The holding of these credits is less and less linked to the credit cards of the stores of the lending organizations, just as it is decreasing with the pension funds and mutuals. Increasingly, it is with lending establishments and sellers that consumer loans are concluded, with the rise of rental with purchase option ( LOA) as a notable phenomenon for several years.

Consumer credit to finance what? Auto credit prevails: the purchase of a vehicle always appears to be the first trigger for recourse to consumer credit (55.6%), far ahead of household goods (22 %) and improvement works in housing (13.8%). The consumer loan is used to consume, but also to balance your budget. It is used to finance current purchases in 10.4% of cases, but also to settle an exceptional invoice or an unexpected (9.3%) or carry out a rearrangement of its credits (6%). Finally, consumer credit is used to pay taxes in 3.4% of contracts according to the Household Credit Observatory. In this case, the borrowers can in fact take out a personal loan, an unrestricted consumer credit. The volume of personal loans is expected to approach 10 billion USD in 2018 according to figures from the French Association of Financial Companies, or almost a quarter of the total amount of consumer loans over the year.
