Assassin’s Creed Valhalla devs explain how missile reversal works
Eivor gets a lot of abilities in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but none are as cool as Missile Reversal, which lets you snatch arrows (and other projectiles) into the air to send them back at your enemies. Ubisoft developers are raising the curtain on the game’s creation in a series of development blogs, and today that means a breakdown of how the missile reversal was accomplished.
There are a lot of very entertaining clips of ragdolling enemies, but the blog also provides an interesting insight into how a little feature like this is implemented. Basically, the game is about whether Eivor was hit, if the projectile is aimed at Eivor, and how close he is to impact.
Each time you press the parry button, the game checks if there is a projectile in a suitable position. If there is any, the incoming projectile is destroyed, a new projectile appears in Eivor’s hand, and then it is fired at the enemy that fired first.
There’s a lot more to it, of course, but you can get all the details on the blog. Besides all of the ragdoll chunks, one of the funniest details is an early bug where Eivor wouldn’t throw a projectile, but the enemy himself had an attacker.
Assassin’s Creed Infinity is the next major milestone in the open-world game series, and even without a lot of detail it’s already proving to be a controversial direction for longtime fans.
