Google TV is rolling out a new Highlights tab for the news
In March this year, Google revealed that it was creating a new “Highlights” tab for the Google TV app so you can stay up to date with the latest news and information about your favorite TV shows and movies.
When the news first broke (or premiered, depending on how you choose to view it), we only had a nice Googley graphic to show what those highlights would look like, but now we have screenshots! I just got an update to the Google TV app on my Pixel phone, and as you can see below, the Highlights tab now appears in the bottom navigation. It comes with a twinkling star icon, and the “For You”, “Shop”, and “Library” tabs have all been pushed to the right accordingly.
Speaking of the ‘Library’ tab, it’s now been renamed ‘Your Stuff’ – a trend I imagine Google will continue through its other Play-branded apps. Personally, I love this and think it’s more personal for watchlist items and purchased or rented content!
As for the aforementioned highlights, the tab itself loads up a Google Discover-style feed of recent articles written about shows and movies you’ve been following or purchased and wishlisted. Google says these posts might also end up showing you behind-the-scenes looks or interviews for the content you’re seeing as well.
For example, if you wanted to see what The Rookie Season 5 release date is (it’s coming soon!), this tab would be a great way to get better informed about that and more. I like this approach to news: put content and updates where they’re relevant rather than in the separate News app or Google Discover in a big clutter.
