How to use add-ons in Firefox for Android
Fire up your Firefox browser on Android using some of your favorite desktop add-ons.
Firefox is one of the few mainstream browsers to support extensions on mobile. These extensions give you additional features that might not otherwise be supported yet.
Here’s how to install and manage Firefox add-ons on Android.
How to find and install add-ons on Firefox
Firefox for Android has a section dedicated to add-ons (or extensions, as Chrome calls them) in the browser. You can install add-ons on Android in two ways. The first is to use the add-ons manager in the app.
You can find these add-ons by tapping the vertical three-dot menu at the bottom left or bottom right, depending on the location of your toolbar.
Then select Additional modules in the context menu. Firefox will take you to its Add-ons Manager, which lists a handful of available and “recommended” add-ons.
To install an add-on, press the + button next to the extension. You will see the permissions required for the extension to work. If you agree with them, press Add. Firefox will download the add-on.
Then choose if you want Allow in private browsing in the pop-up window (You can always change private mode support later). If this is enabled, you will be able to use the add-on even when you switch to private mode or incognito mode.
Hit Ok I understood to complete the process. The add-on will be displayed above the others under Enabled.
Alternatively, you can go to addons.mozilla.org using Firefox on your phone, select an add-on and press Add to Firefox> Add.
How to update add-ons
For some reason, Firefox for Android does not allow you to update add-ons on your own. Instead, if an add-on has an update, Firefox will update it automatically when a new browser version is deployed. And if there is no update of an add-on installed and the new version of Firefox does not support it, it will be temporarily disabled.
How to temporarily disable or remove an add-on
If you want to disable an add-on or remove it entirely, you can do so by going to the Firefox Add-ons Manager.
To deactivate an add-on, tap the three-dot menu and navigate to Add-ons> Add-ons Manager. Select an add-on that you want to disable, then disable the slider adjacent to Enabled. Use the same procedure to activate a disabled add-on.
If you want to remove an add-on, tap Remove rather.
How to customize add-ons
Some add-ons allow you to customize their functionality. In the case of High Definition YouTube, you can choose the video quality that YouTube should stream by default. Tap the three-dot menu and navigate to Additional modules and select an add-on.
Firefox will take you to a page where you can customize the functionality of this add-on if it has adjustable functionality.
Use and manage add-ons on Android like a pro
Firefox for Android only has a small number of add-ons on Android, but some are very useful, like Tomato Clock, which helps with efficient time management, for example.
Firefox add-ons are generally safe to use, but you should always make sure that you trust them and that you are happy with the permissions they ask for before using them.
