GREAT INDIAN, NY, 22 October 2021 / PRNewswire / – Robert Cruickshank Associates (RCA), innovators at the intersection of broadband and power grids, today announced a breakthrough that is creating energy opportunities for broadband cable operators: the First nationwide availability of standards-based Optimal Load Shaping (OLS) signals that enable operators to reduce their electrical expenses and play a leading role in improving the efficiency of electricity grids and micro-grids, while accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.
RCA’s GRIDIoT® OLS signals modulate and shift the electrical load on the power grid by working directly with the Internet of Things (IoT) like electric vehicles, batteries and thermostats. Broadband service providers can use GRIDIoT products to better control their own power needs, as well as to create new business opportunities by helping utilities, businesses and smart cities to ensure the availability of electricity and the reduction of carbon emissions.
GRIDIoT OLS signals ensure that the cheapest and cleanest electricity is used in broadband operations and connected communities. OLS signals allow broadband operators to reduce operating costs by up to 20% and more as technology improves. Equally important, GRIDIoT OLS signals project the future availability of grid resources for maximum efficiency and sustainability, as changing electricity demand becomes an integral part of grid modernization and customer-side transactive energy management.
Broadband operators can use GRIDIoT OLS signals to help energy providers avoid capital investments and increase operational efficiency by reducing grid congestion and increasing utilization of generation-dependent infrastructure . GRIDIoT OLS signals comply with the American National Standard ANSI SCTE 267 2021.
“Optimal shaping of the electrical demand load is the backbone of grid modernization,” said Dr. Robert Cruickshank, CTO for RCA. “The GRIDIoT OLS API enables electric vehicle and battery charging, rooftop solar power, thermal storage and more to play a crucial role in balancing supply and demand. Additionally, the proximity and ubiquitous reach of broadband networks will enable cable operators to provide monitoring and management that will reduce energy costs, maximize uptime, and meet sustainability goals. “
Instead of today’s fragmented retail electricity pricing schemes, GRIDIoT OLS signals summarize thousands of utility pricing schemes and demand-side energy management programs in one database. unique and searchable data. OLS signals combine electrical load forecasts, renewable energy sources, wholesale prices, grid congestion, and other factors to create large, hyper-local forms of load that jointly optimize generation, transmission , distribution, storage and use of electricity. “Technologies like OLS can put cable at the center of every discussion about the cost, availability and sustainability of energy,” said David M. Fellows, chairman of the engineering committee of the SCTE.
GRIDIoT OLS signals are available online through an interactive web viewer and application programming interface (API). Any device or energy management system can programmatically interrogate the GRIDIoT PLC for an OLS signal, then decide autonomously to shift some or all of its electricity demand over time periods at a lower cost. The system is designed to improve prices, optimize efficiency and minimize power outages.
OLS technology offers significant benefits to utilities, transmission and distribution system operators and third-party electricity providers. GRIDIoT OLS propels optimal load shaping in the energy management market. Manufacturers of energy storage systems and controls can easily integrate OLS technology and signals for the benefit of their organizations and customers. . The GRIDIoT OLS API is free for non-commercial use and can be accessed at optimumloadshape.com. For more information, please contact [email protected].
About ANSI SCTE 267
The US National Standard OLS (ANSI SCTE 267 2021) defines an electronic payload, aka the “optimization signal”, and a client-server platform for distributing OLS signals to power consumers. The OLS server is cloud based. Customers are implemented in flexible load controllers such as batteries, water heaters, air conditioners, refrigeration systems and commercial and industrial uses of electricity. In addition to an OLS server regularly broadcasting signals over large geographic areas, any OLS client can query the OLS server to verify some form of hyper-local load by providing its latitude, longitude, and power supplier to help manage congestion in the last mile of the grid. RCA invented OLS and spearheaded the SCTE 267 and 271 power management and monitoring standards.
