Saints report: CSS baseball turns a hit into a win – Reuters Sports News
DULUTH — St. Scholastica managed to earn a win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball game in which he recorded a hit on Tuesday.
The Saints scored on a pair of wild pitches in the third inning to defeat St. John’s 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at Wade Stadium after losing the opener 8-2.
CSS took the no-hitter lead on a two-out exchange, putting two runners in scoring position on a walk and an error. Matt Tautges and Luke Schemenauer then scored when Johnnies pitcher Casey Trapp threw wild pitches to each of the next two batters.
The Saints’ only hit of the game, a two-out single from Zach Harding in the fourth, did not make it into the result.
The Johnnies finally broke through in the seventh with a first brace from Jordan Amundson, who advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Rodney Erickson’s sacrificial volley, but the Saints managed to block the run tied in a position of score in each of the last two innings.
Trapp suffered a loss without a chance despite allowing a hit in a complete game. He struck out seven and walked four. Jack Perala allowed the only unearned run and scattered five hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked two. Wes Kemming pitched the last two innings for the stoppage, allowing two hits and striking out two.
In Game 1, the Johnnies scored three times in the top of the first inning and led wire to wire, holding the Saints off the scoreboard after scoring twice late in the first.
Max Nyrop went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the winners. CSS had four hits from four players, including a double from Schemenauer.
Nathan Brandecker allowed two earned runs on four hits over six innings for the win, while Dallas Miller took the loss for CSS, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings.
CSS (7-11, 2-4 MIAC) is scheduled for an MIAC doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead on Thursday.
A late gathering helps the Saints buy time
Lauren Laviano’s RBI brace broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning and helped St. Scholastica to a 5-3 win and a double-share with Carleton in Tuesday’s MIAC game in Northfield, Minnesota.
The Saints lost the opener, 7-1.
CSS took a 3-0 lead for an inning and a half of Game 2, only for the Knights to tie at the end of the third inning. The teams remained deadlocked until the seventh, with Olivia Howe and Laviano recording back-to-back one-out doubles. Grace Hadlich kicked off another run with a single and an outfield error. A potential third run was thrown in a play at home plate.
Carleton started the top of the seventh with a double, but the Knights were dismissed with two strikeouts and a pop-up foul.
Howe went 3-for-4 to lead the Saints offense and was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Laviano and Hadlich added two hits each.
In game one, CSS started fast, but got only one of three runners from second base and was held off the scoreboard after the first inning.
Laviano was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Emma Bolin added a pair of hits.
Emma Sather suffered the loss after being kicked out of the circle in round two. She allowed four earned runs on three hits with five walks in 1 2/3 innings.
CSS (11-14, 3-8 MIAC) is set to host St. Mary’s on Thursday as part of MIAC.
