Seagate 20TB Hard Drives Coming to Gaming PCs to Store Your Steam Library
SSDs might impress more than hard drives with their blistering transfer speeds and portability, but Seagate’s recent plan for its new consumer hard drives will always spark interest. Previously, its gigantic 20TB hard drives were reserved for corporate use, but it plans to release them to the public later this year, according to Seeking Alpha.
Conventional hard drives still have their place in the best gaming PCs, offering unmatched price per GB. And if you consider that many older games in your library don’t actually benefit from faster SSD storage, a large hard drive like this might be the best way to take the strain off your NVMe drive.
Seagate also notes that while its 20TB drives can still use the long-standing PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) technology used on its current models, a new HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) design can store more data, allowing even bigger hard drives. in the future. It’s not yet clear how much that will cost, but the MSRP of Seagate’s Barracuda Pro 10TB hard drive of $ 349.99 gives us an idea of the steep price we can expect for these future models.
For now, it would probably be cheaper to just uninstall all the games from your backlog to free up space, rather than going for a 20TB hard drive for instant access to all your games. Give it a number of years, and hard drives of that capacity will start to drop at more affordable prices.
