Worrying trend in Edwards as small town COVID cases rise rapidly
Edwards, Miss. (WLBT) – A disturbing trend is developing in a town in Hinds County where there has already been one coronavirus death.
Edwards Police Sergeant Kelvin Mixon died after recently contracting the virus.
In the town of Edwards on Monday, Hinds County deputies handed out masks in force.
Mayor Marcus Wallace says 12% of the population there have tested positive for the virus and a good number of test results are still available.
Mayor Marcus Wallace said: ‘A lot of attention is being paid to big cities, but it’s more deadly and dangerous in smaller towns, just like what we see here in Edwards. A few people get the virus and in 30 days it could spread hugely throughout the city. »
Mayor Wallace says 500 people have been tested. His concern is that holiday weekend gatherings could drive up his number of infected even further.
“I’m not asking all of this if you just don’t have to leave home to stay home right now because those numbers are going to be very high this week at the end of the 4th of July weekend,” he said. said Wallace.
Edwards residents are required to wear masks in public.
The city’s Covid infection rate is 3 times what the health department likes to see.
More restrictions could be put in place here to keep residents safe.
